Regardless of the point at which a student declares a major, they are concerned with what they can do with that major. The O’Brien Center boasts a well-rounded forum of resources to help guide your conversations.
Encourage students to utilize Advantage.
All students are assigned an Advantage profile upon registering for classes. It’s suggested that students review and update their account anytime something changes. Advantage gives students the opportunity to see up-to-date event information, part-time and full-time employment and internship opportunities and much more. Students can book an appointment through their Advantage Account. Once logged in, students should click on “Request An Advising Appointment” on the right side of the home page under “Shortcuts”.
Choosing a Career Path.
As students begin their coursework, focusing on career paths and the exbornante opportunities in front of them is important. If they are undeclared, they can explore different career and major options through Destination Exploration. Students can also utilize O*Net to explore their values, interests, skills and personality. They can also utilize Vault for further research, or meet with a Career Advisor to discuss options further.
The Internship Search.
74% of Employers prefer to hire candidates with relevant work experience acquired through a co-op or internship. (NACE 2012)
Taking advantage of the various experiential opportunities at Merrimack College is key in a student’s success post-graduation. Students should first make sure that they are participating in the opportunity that is most right for their exploratory process. Students also want to prepare application materials designed to impress potential employers. Students may drop by our Career Lab, or can make an appointment with a Career Advisor at a time that is most convenient for them. Internship, co-op’s and employment opportunities are posted on Advantage.
Students can also utilize InterviewStream to prepare for an interview. This allows students to participate in a mock interview from the comfort of their own computer.
Finally, LinkedIn is an important resource as students begin to build their professional network. We suggest that students join the Merrimack College Alumni LinkedIn group, as well as utilize the Alumni and Recent Graduate job search tool.
