Position Overview & Responsibilities

The School of Liberal Arts at Merrimack College has an opening for an Administrative Assistant. This position will provide department chair and faculty support for all of SLA’s programs located in Cushing and Sullivan Halls. (These include Economics, English, History, Philosophy, Political Science, Religious and Theological Studies, Sociology, Women’s and Gender Studies. World Languages and Cultural Studies, International Studies, Social Justice, Environmental Science and Sustainability, and the MA programs in Public Affairs and Spirituality.)

The following are responsibilities of the Administrative Assistant:

  • Assist chairs with course schedules.
  • Assist chairs, faculty members, and advocates with Tenure and Promotion activities.
  • Assist chairs with faculty searches and new faculty hires.
  • Assist chairs with adjunct requests and overload forms.
  • Process student evaluations.
  • Maintain departmental operating budgets.
  • Manage and supervise student workers.
  • Assist faculty with expense reports.
  • Schedule room requests and maintenance requests.
  • Schedule department meetings.
  • Filing, photocopying, ordering office supplies, print center orders, processing payment vouchers and check requests.
  • Ordering refreshments for events and meetings.
  • Assisting with data collection for annual reports, program reviews, etc.
  • Use campus systems such as CARS/Cognos, EMS, NetFacilities, Adobe Sign.
  • Maintain shared files on Google Drive for course syllabi, CVs of adjuncts.
  • Maintain and update department websites.
  • Other duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor’s degree preferred.
  • A minimum of three years of experience providing administrative assistance, preferably in a higher education setting.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to coordinate multiple projects and tasks simultaneously.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Experience with MS Office (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher), Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Calendars), database management, and other technology- and/or web-based tools.
  • Visual design and social media experience.
  • Ability to carry out responsibilities with minimal supervision, work effectively both independently and collaboratively and maintain confidentiality of sensitive information.

This is an on-campus position. This is not a remote or hybrid position as employees are essential in order to provide a fully on-campus, residential college experience for our students and the community.
