Position Overview & Responsibilities

The Department of Applied Human Development and Community Studies at Merrimack College invites applicants for the position of Assistant or Associate Professor of Practice – Non-Tenure Track to begin in September 2022. The candidate will have a 4/4 teaching load and will teach across programs in the department. We are specifically looking for an individual who will teach in both the Master of Social Work and Master’s in Community Engagement programs.

Candidates must have a Master of Social Work from a CSWE accredited program or equivalency established through CSWE and experience in community engagement with a doctorate (EdD, Ph) in a related field. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and possess a willingness to serve as an academic advisor and to actively serve at the program, department, college, and community levels. We welcome applicants with expertise in community organizing, community-based research, and other areas pertinent to the community engagement field. In addition to demonstrated teaching experience and effectiveness, the candidate will have at least 2 years’ post MSW practice at either the micro, mezzo or macro level.

The Master of Social Work and Community Engagement programs are located in an interdisciplinary department – Applied Human Development and Community Studies, which comprises graduate programs in Community Engagement, School Counseling, and Social Work, and an undergraduate program in Human Development & Human Services. The department is situated within the Winston School of Education and Social Policy. All programs in the department include experiential learning, practica, and/or and field experiences. A minimum of 51% of the workload will be in the MSW program. As a department hire, the individual in this position may be required to teach undergraduate courses at times.

The Master of Social Work Program is an on-ground advanced generalist program in candidacy with CSWE. The program is designed to offer both a part-time and full time and Advanced Standing Track for students. The Community Engagement Program is presently fully online and includes a Master’s degree and graduate certificate programs. Grounded in the Catholic philosophy of the Augustinians, the institution is dedicated to a tradition of seeking truth through inquiry and dialogue; working with vulnerable and marginalized populations; and affirms the values of human diversity, self-determination, sustainability, and community and global solidarity.

Candidates should provide a cover letter which explains how the institution’s mission and the aims of the social work and community engagement programs are compatible with their approach to graduate education. Required qualifications:

● Masters in Social Work from a CSWE accredited program or equivalency established

● Doctoral degree (EdD. PhD) in relevant field

● Minimum 2-years post MSW experience in the practice and/or teaching in the field of social work

● Experience teaching and/or working in the community engagement field

● Experience and comfort teaching online; willingness to teach online

● Availability to teach in-person and online in the late afternoon and evening

● Confidence and skill teaching and advising adult learners Preferred qualifications:

● LCSW/ LICSW preferred for clinical practice classes

● Experience working with and/or teaching about multicultural populations, immigrant populations, or underserved communities

● Experience teaching blended and hybrid courses

● Proficiency in a second language

● Familiarity with Latinx communities and bilingual Spanish a plus

Unless otherwise stated above, this is an on-campus position. This is not a remote or hybrid position as employees are essential in order to provide a fully on-campus, residential college experience for our students and the community.
