Position Overview: The Career Advisor for Health Sciences is a member of the O’Brien Center for Career Development’s professional staff. S/he is responsible for establishing and nurturing long-term relationships with Health Sciences undergraduate and graduate students beginning in their first semester on campus. The Advisor will support students’ career development through comprehensive career advising including assessment of unique skills, values, and interests; exploration of life choices and career paths; matching students with best fit internships, in collaboration with the Experiential Education Program Manager; and guiding students through full-time job searches. The Advisor will primarily work one-on-one with students through advising appointments, but may also spend time collaborating on team programs. S/he will work closely with faculty, the Experiential Education Program Manager, Academic Program Manager, the Employer Relations team, and serve as a conduit for the flow of communication to identify student needs and communicate opportunities. The Career Advisor reports directly to the Associate Vice President & Executive Director, O’Brien Center for Career Development.  


 Advising & Assessments: 

  • Using the best practices within career advising, serve undergraduate and graduate students by: 
  • Advising students with self-exploration (administering assessments of values, interests, personality, skills, and strengths), career exploration and discernment, and guiding students through the results 
  • Advising students individually and in small groups on other career development topics such as selection of major, resume, cover letter development, internship/co-op/full-time job searches, networking, interviewing, job offers, salary negotiation, professionalism, and emotional intelligence  
  • Helping students create their personalized Career Action Plan 
  • Advising and helping prepare students who are applying to graduate/professional schools and/or service opportunities 

Facilitate classroom presentations such as: 

  • General announcements of upcoming events and career development services offered by The O’Brien Center 
  • Workshops on various career development topics 
  • First Year Experience program sessions and corresponding small group sessions 
  • Assisting with professional development portion of HSC4850: Health Sciences Internship  

Experiential Education: 

  • Work closely with the Experiential Education Program Manager to provide students’ with comprehensive support throughout the required internship experience  
  • Maintain a strong understanding of career development professional standards, competencies and outcomes; current workforce trends, and employer needs/professional development expectations 

Cross-Campus Collaboration: 

  • Engage in regular meetings and initiate frequent communication with the Academic Dean and other faculty and staff within Health Sciences 
  • Assist other offices in their programming/signature events such as Admissions Events, Homecoming, Commencement, and Reunion 

Special Programs & Events: 

  • Assist in planning, implementation, and evaluation of all departmental services and signature initiatives, including career fairs and employer/alumni events, walk-in advising hours, incoming student orientation sessions, and off-site Professional Development Retreats 

Health Sciences Alumni: 

  • Partner with the Alumni Relations team to leverage the Health Sciences alumni community, including communication to alumni, tracking alumni demographic, employment, graduate school data, and planning additional alumni events desired by the School of Health Sciences 


  • Master’s degree required
  • 5+ years of career development and/or counseling experience required, preferably in higher education 
  • Strategy development and team management experience preferred  
  • Thrives in an entrepreneurial atmosphere, has a high degree of personal responsibility, is committed to continuous improvement to ensure the best outcomes, and has unwavering focus on the students we serve  
  • Ability to identify and use selected assessments to engage student self-awareness, and administer, score, interpret, report, and record findings from assessment instruments appropriately 
  • High level ability to collaborate with faculty, students, administrators, and departments campus-wide 
  • Collaborative and team focused working style with the ability to multi-task and thrive in a changing, dynamic environment 
  • Knowledge of best practices in student career advising; ability to identify, select, and implement career advising/coaching/counseling interventions and techniques appropriate to student goals and needs 
  • Deep understanding of the ever-changing workforce and industry trends 
  • Demonstrated evidence of strong and visible leadership skills; successful cross-institutional programming and initiatives; and creation of new programs
