Position Overview: Under the leadership of the AVP & Executive Director of Philanthropy, the Director will take a collaborative approach for planning and implementing a comprehensive program to cultivate and solicit philanthropic grants from private foundations and corporations in support of the College’s strategic priorities. The Director will work to establish, sustain and deepen mutually beneficial partnerships between Merrimack College and regional, family, corporate, and private trusts and foundations, as well as major national foundations.  

The ideal candidate will have fundraising experience with a focus on corporate and foundation philanthropy, preferably within an academic environment. The candidate should have the charisma, cultural sensitivity and communication skills necessary to be an effective representative of the College while persuasively articulating the case for support to foundation partners and key alumni and friends of the College. 


  • Manage the College’s relationship with a diverse portfolio of 75-100 private organizations that are capable of making gifts of $25,000+ with an emphasis on six- and seven-figure gifts.
  • Develop, recommend, and implement appropriate strategies for cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding these organizations. Consult with colleagues in the Office of Development and Alumni Relations, administrators, faculty, board members and other volunteers, as appropriate.
  • Prepare major college proposals for philanthropic support, and assist faculty and administration in solicitations for departmental and programmatic support. Oversee the process such that all proposals meet written guidelines, have clear and realistic goals and budgets, and are submitted within established deadlines. Ensure that all private grant submissions comply with funding program priorities, including college-wide and external policies.
  • Work with major gift prospects and the major gift team particularly in the overlap between institutional and individual prospects. Work collaboratively to develop and make accessible content and proposal templates for multiple purposes.
  • Continually engage faculty and academic administrators to assess fundraising priorities and departmental needs as well as internal capabilities to execute on funding proposals. Engage and regularly monitor areas of corporate and foundation interest, seeking matches to
  • Merrimack College’s mission.
  • Proactively identify and research new foundations which have no giving history with Merrimack College but have guidelines or missions that align with the College’s priorities. Strategically engage new prospective funders through direct outreach and meetings as appropriate and engage the Merrimack senior management and adminsitrators, Trustees, and alumni in these activities as warranted.
  • Responsible for the management of information resources for corporate and foundation prospects and donors, including data management, research, pipeline, preparation of briefings and reports; information services to faculty and administration; and, the compilation of information from across campus on existing relationships.
  • In collaboration with the stewardship team, work to prepare appropriate thank you letters, grant reports, and other impact reports aimed at engaging and stewarding donors. Work to maintain a regular schedule of contacts and communication with foundations, such as College updates, invitations to events, and opportunities to bring foundation staff to campus.
  • Promote and facilitate the proposal development process for collaborative and interdisciplinary proposals with diverse groups of faculty and/or staff. Work with the President’s Office and the Fiscal Affairs and Business office to develop and implement strategic grant making processes.
  • Collaborate as needed with the Office of Sponsored Program to regularly provide faculty with presentations, workshops, group and individual trainings on grant-seeking methods and processes.
  • Assume additional responsibilities as required.


  • Bachelor’s Degree plus a minimum of 5 years of successful Corporate and Foundation work experience as a fundraising professional with a track record of achievement raising gifts at the 6+ figure level.
  • Demonstrated success in identifying and securing fundraising relationships with corporate and foundation leaders.
  • In-depth knowledge of successful proposal-writing techniques and processes.
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills with the proven ability to engage and inspire a wide range of audiences.
  • Strong technological skills including proficiency in common Office programs, donor records systems, messaging applications, and Internet research.
  • Ability to establish credibility and confidence with stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in working with a diverse student body, faculty, staff, and other constituents.
  • Ability to travel, including nights and weekends.
