Position Overview: Reporting to the Assistant Vice President of Leadership and Major Gifts, the Leadership Gift Officer will play a vital role in raising leadership-level Merrimack expendable and endowment gifts in support of the Together for Good Campaign. The Leadership Gift Officer will develop and implement strategies for securing financial support from a portfolio of donor prospects determined to have the ability to make gifts of $10,000 or more to Merrimack College. In addition, he/she will contribute to the success of Merrimack’s 1947 planned giving society. The Leadership Gift Officer will have opportunity to be mentored in their skill as a fundraiser.


  • Manage a portfolio of 150-200 rated Leadership Giving donors, prospective donors, and future track donors.
  • Strategize with the Assistant Vice President of Leadership and Major Gifts to design and implement of identification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship strategies. Partner with campus leadership, development colleagues, faculty, trustees, and other volunteers as appropriate.
  • Conduct an average range of 10-15 face-to-face visits per month with the focus of securing philanthropic investments of $10,000K+ as well as supporting the expansion of documented planned gifts to the College.
  • Complete and maintain current data tracking for his/her entire prospect portfolio in Merrimack’s fundraising CRM (Millennium). This includes timely completion of contact reports, updating prospect stages, next step tasks, and proposals
  • In addition to face to face visits, utilize various communication methods such as phone and correspondence to keep donors informed and connected to Merrimack
  • Prepare written donor proposals for leadership gift solicitations when appropriate.
  • Partner with stewardship colleagues to ensure donors receive proper acknowledgement, recognition, and stewardship.
  • Conduct limited project management and support as needed. This may include, but is not limited to or necessarily inclusive of: (1) Support of special events (including attendance) and other special departmental or college-wide efforts, particularly those involving rated prospects or volunteers. (2) Serve on other committees or task forces that advance prospect relationships and the overall goals of the College.


  • Bachelor’s degree is required.
  • Minimum of two years of experience working in higher education fundraising, or applicable and relevant experience in a related field
  • Personal capacity to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Must be able and willing to work occasional evenings and weekends. Must be able and willing to travel frequently throughout the United States to attend events and to meet with prospects and donors to further cultivation and solicitation strategies.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proven track record of successful higher education fundraising
  • An energetic professional with a proven track record of building excellent donor/client relationships strategically and professionally.
  • Willingness and ability to make “cold calls” and to cultivate relationships with and solicit individuals and/or corporations and foundations.
  • Demonstrate the aptitude to represent the College in a highly professional and effective manner.
