Community Standards Guidance
College is not only a place for learning but also for personal growth and connection. Our community standards help students understand what it means to live and learn together with respect, care and responsibility. As parents and families, you are essential partners in reinforcing these values, and we look forward to working with you as your student navigates this exciting chapter.
While the student conduct process is focused on student learning and development, we recognize that parents and families are essential sources of support. Even though you may not be able to attend conduct meetings or serve as an advisor, your involvement still matters deeply.
Here are a few meaningful ways you can support your student:
- Offer emotional support. It’s normal for students to feel stressed or overwhelmed during this process. Simply being available to listen and show care can go a long way.
- Encourage reflection and accountability. Help your student think through what happened and how they can move forward. Supporting their ability to take ownership—while knowing you’re in their corner—can be a powerful growth opportunity.
- Let them lead. As tempting as it may be to step in, students benefit most when they take the lead in communicating and following through. You can help by offering reminders, asking questions, or helping them plan—without taking over.
- Stay informed. Reviewing the Student Handbook and understanding the conduct process can help you feel more confident in guiding your student through it.
- Point them toward resources. Encourage your student to reach out to campus supports like the Counseling Center, Residence Life, or Student Accessibility Services if they have questions or need help.
Supporting your student’s growth through this process—while encouraging accountability and self-advocacy—can have a lasting impact on their development.
