Washington D.C. Semester

Study Abroad - Washington D.C.

Students in the political science major have many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, gaining invaluable experience and building their resumes:

Washington Semester

Students may spend a semester at the American University Washington Semester Program. Students participate in internships (for credit) three days per week and take classes at American University two days per week.

Scholarships

American University has competitive scholarships available to Merrimack students.  We strongly encourage all students considering spending a semester in the American University Washington Semester program to apply.  You may apply for these even before you are formally accepted into the program.  It is a streamlined application process for all scholarships.

Timing

Most students plan to study in Washington, D.C. or to study abroad during one semester their Junior year.  Some also have taken advantage of summer opportunities- there is a program at American University over the summer, and there are also options for those interested in studying abroad in the summer.  Occasionally, a student will need to have different timing and go earlier or later than their Junior year.

Talk with your advisor about your options. It is key to plan ahead!  Applications for a Fall semester experience are generally due in early March in the previous semester; Applications for a Spring semester experience are generally due in late September. If you are interested in the program or have any questions, please contact Dr. Harry Wessel  at [email protected].
