Richard S. Potember, Ph.D. works for the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense for Research and Engineering. 

He was a Principal Engineer at the MITRE Corporation. Prior to that position, he was a Program Manager at the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA).Before that, he served as a Program Manager and Principal Investigator at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics laboratory (JHU/APL).

Richard teaches graduate level courses in the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University in the fields of Biomedical Engineering and Materials Science and Engineering. He has also taught in the JHU School of Arts and Sciences, and in the School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS).

At JHU/APL, he was a principal investigator on numerous externally funded programs, he has over ninety-five publications, holds fourteen U.S. patents, and fifteen foreign patents. Richard’s research has been transferred to industry five times.

Richard served as a Trustee at Goucher College. He was Chairperson of the Technology Committee and served on the Finance, Enrollment, and Library Committees.

Richard lives in Ellicott City, Maryland with his wife Susan Furney. They have two grown sons and one new grandchild.
