Frequently Asked Questions
Why is studying abroad important?
Study abroad enables you to integrate your studies at Merrimack College with a curriculum abroad and gain new perspectives on a variety of subjects. You will exchange ideas and information with students from different cultures and gain an increased awareness of cultural diversity and international issues. Perhaps the most important aspect of study abroad is that you will live in a new and challenging environment that inspires both personal and intellectual growth.
How do my credits from a semester abroad transfer back?
An official transcript will be sent to the Office of Global Education at the end of your program. Students must earn the equivalent of a “C” or better for transfer credit to be granted. Transfer credits appear as a “T” on your transcripts; they count as credit, but are not factored into your GPA.
Do I need a certain GPA to study abroad?
The Office of Global Education requires that students:
- Are in good academic standing.
- Are in good disciplinary standing.
- Have a minimum 2.8 GPA for study abroad.
- Have a minimum 3.4 GPA (or permission from the faculty leader) for faculty-led honors courses.
Do I need to study a foreign language in order to study abroad?
It is not a requirement. There are many programs that are available where the classes are taught in English.
When/how should I apply for a passport?
If you are applying for a passport for the first time, there is a total fee of $135. According to the U.S. Passports and International Travel website, the processing time for a passport is four to six weeks from the submission of the paperwork to the receipt of the passport. In our experience, however, you should begin the paperwork at least three to four months ahead of your departure date. Your paperwork can be submitted at your local post office or town/city hall.
Is it safe to study abroad?
With international travel, there is always a risk. But Merrimack College thoroughly researches its international programs to ensure their safety. If ever there was a time when an area is deemed unsafe, the students affected will be evacuated.
How much money do I need to have saved for my study abroad trip?
This will depend on your program and length of stay. For travel and other expenses, we recommend having about $2,000 saved up for emergencies. Border control at your host country will often ask about your finances, specifically about how you are financing your trip. They do this to ensure you will not be working while in the country.
What is the cost of study abroad at Merrimack?
Study-abroad students are charged the same cost of studying for a semester at Merrimack. These costs include tuition, comprehensive fees, room and board and international health and insurance.
How do I pay for study abroad?
