You’ll have the opportunity for hands-on learning, outside the classroom as a communication and media student. Here is a selection of our students’ internship experiences.
Lauren Emmons
Intern, Callanan & Klein Communications
What is interesting about my internship?
The coolest part of my internship is being able to help plan and execute events for clients. This semester I’ve been able to assist with a concert for ALT 92.9, plan a Zombie flash mob for Ghost Ship Harbor and raise money for military children at a charity luncheon.
What have I learned during my internship experience?
Throughout my internship, I have been able to learn so much about the public relations industry. I think the most influential piece of information I learned was being able to know your audience and tailor your messages towards them.
Danielle Donovan
Public Relations Intern, Agency 451
What is interesting about my internship?
Three employees on my team are Merrimack College alumni. It is great to see people who took similar steps become so successful in their profession. But the best part of this internship is that I got to commute into Boston and it was a paid position.
What have I learned during my internship experience?
As a public relations intern at Agency 451, I was incorporated into real agency work. I was involved with national clients assisting my team with ongoing campaigns. My everyday duties at Agency 451 include the responsibilities of an account coordinator, which is a typical entry-level position at agencies. This has given me the confidence that I know exactly what I will be doing next year for work. I have the experience future employees are looking for and having this company on my resume allows me to stand out.
Joel DiMambro
Intern, Austin Preparatory School
What is interesting about my internship?
The experience of working in a professional environment while developing life skills along the way are some of the best things to come out of my internship. Working at a school provides a sense of community and builds relationships across many branches of life.
What have I learned during my internship experience?
I’ve been taught new strategies in social media marketing and special writing skills for projects I had no prior experience with. I also learned a great deal of information about graphic design and photography regarding school events and the online publishing involved.
Kayli Adams
Intern, WMUR
What is interesting about my internship?
WMUR is the only news station that serves all of New Hampshire and the greater region of Massachusetts. This environment matches my personal and professional values, and I am learning so many skills here that I can carry with me throughout my life and in other career aspects. I am so grateful for this opportunity.
What have I learned during my internship experience?
There are many employees at WMUR in different departments such as producers, directors, anchors, reporters, meteorologists, social media/web, sports, advertising/sales, engineering/IT, master control operators, creative services, assignment editors and Chronicle editors. My primary responsibilities include using the teleprompter and cameras during the live newscasts and newscast preparation, including the daily organization and decoration of sets. I shadow and help many people in the station including producers, directors, anchors/reporters and more.
Brianna Mahoney
Campus Ministry Intern, Merrimack College
What is interesting about my internship?
At my internship with Campus Ministry at Merrimack College I was their first intern ever! I loved the creative freedom I had to design and promote content. My supervisors welcomed me with open arms and were just as passionate about social justice work as I am.
What have I learned during my internship experience?
The amount I learned and observed during my experience is immeasurable and priceless. I learned how to adapt to a new work environment and team successfully, how to create a sense of presence and belonging for yourself in a professional manner and how to enjoy what you do all the while!
