Opportunities for Engagemen

Political Science Opportunities for Engagement

Get hands-on experience participating in political science engagement opportunities like study abroad, internships, Moot Court, Model UN and more.

Study Abroad or in Washington, D.C.

You’ll have many opportunities to learn beyond the classroom, gaining invaluable experience and building your resume in the Washington Semester or study abroad programs or Model United Nations.

Public Service Internships

Participating in an internship during your undergraduate years provides invaluable experiential learning.  Students can do internships for credit during the summer or the academic year.

Moot Court

Participating in Moot Court will enhance your ability to think on your feet and improve your oral advocacy, analytical and critical-thinking skills.

Political Science Honor Society

If you have completed four courses (at least 15 credits) in the major, 62 credits in the college overall,  and attained a 3.0 minimum GPA in both the major and overall, we invite you to apply for admission to the Merrimack Chapter of Pi Sigma Alpha, the national honor society of political science.

The honor society offers students with diverse political interests the chance to get involved with the political process, and provides opportunities to network and be active in the community. It also coordinates speakers on campus. Email us to learn more.

St. Germain Memorial Lecture

The annual department-hosted lecture honors its inaugural chair, James J. St. Germain, for his many contributions to Merrimack College and its students.

Pre-Law Society

Merrimack’s Pre-Law Society is an officially recognized student-run group that promotes the study and appreciation of law. It offers you a great way to interact with other students interested in law and the opportunity to pursue law-related activities.

Working with Merrimack’s pre-law adviser, the Pre-Law Society:

  • Provides information about law school and the admission process.
  • Holds career nights and hosts guest speakers.
  • Provides internship opportunities with law firms.
  • Connects you with legal and government agencies.
  • Offers mentoring and shadowing opportunities.

Model UN

The department is working on building our Model UN and International Relations Club.  The group offers students the chance to learn more about international political decision making in a fun and friendly environment, and to take part in conferences and competitions with students from around the world. Contact Professor Matthew Cohen to learn more (cohenm@merrimack.edu).

Political Science Associations

These national academic associations have great resources for students seeking to better understand what to do with a major or minor related to Political Science or Public Policy.

The American Political Science Association also has a specific career resource page with links to job opportunities.Â
