Learn Jazz Over the Summer
The Merrimack College Summer Jazz Workshop promises to deliver an exciting and affordable opportunity for young musicians within the greater Merrimack Valley community.
We provide a fun balance of educational and performance activities throughout an intensive four days of musical study. The workshop is open to students from seventh grade to 12th grade. Other grades may be accepted after discussion.
The workshop is led by our accomplished faculty who work with students in various settings - classroom, ensemble and lesson - throughout the week. Our faculty direct all ensembles, as well as teach classes in topics such as improvisation and jazz history. Additionally, current Merrimack music students assist as mentors throughout the workshop.
By the end of their experience, participants will have studied and performed a range of musical styles, from swing to contemporary. We equip students with the tools necessary to perform within a jazz setting, whether in their school big band or at an informal jam session. Additionally, we teach practice strategies so students can continue their education. No previous jazz experience is required and this program is designed for all band students with an interest in learning about playing jazz.
