“Optimism” is an original stage play I wrote and filmed the performance with the help of fellow senior Abbey Sigman, who was the director of the show. The play revolves around the life and times of a man named Stanley Lawson. Throughout the play we see Stanley grow from a young elementary school student into a member of the working class in the state of Kansas, all while dealing with every challenge that life throws his way.
Along Stanley’s journey we witness the complicated relationship of his mother and father, Yvette and Peter Lawson; his development of a lifelong friendship with a young girl named Amber; and even his connection with a supernatural figure named Theodore, who has a mission to ensure Stanley lives an optimistic and upbeat life despite all the struggles he faces. Through all these struggles, Stanley finds not only what will make his life more satisfactory, but also how his actions can change the lives of the ones he cares about.
Playwriting is how I first got into the theatre world, as it was the subject of the first class I took at my local community theater. While we only wrote plays that were ten minutes in length at the maximum, it was the first time I dipped my toes into the theatre world. That wonderfully creative experience drove me to study Theatre Arts at Merrimack College. Ever since then I’ve always wanted to write my own original full length play, and I thought that now was a better time than ever. I felt it only right to end my academic theatre career the same way that I started it, by writing a play. This has been a story I’ve wanted to write for some time now, and I’m so excited for people to finally get the opportunity to see it!
