Position Overview & Responsibilities
Merrimack College is a fast growing institution of higher education and seeks to add a skilled Benefits Manager to its Human Resources team. The Benefits Manager will specialize in providing top-notch benefits administration to a robust community of employees. As an integral part of HR, the Benefits Manager is the subject matter expert on health, welfare and retirement and will provide effective support to HR functions for services throughout the College. The Benefits Manager oversees all operations of benefits plans including enrollment, education, and issue resolution while acting as a liaison between employees and external partners. The Benefits Manager will also serve as a key thought leader in the development of all benefits initiatives.

Responsibilities include:

  • Manage the development and operation of all benefit plans for the College, including medical, dental, FSA, HRA, vision, life, AD&D, COBRA, short and long term disability, retirement, legal, EAP, and tuition benefits while ensuring plans are competitive and relevant.

  • Maintain fiduciary responsibility for retirement plan amendments, RPAC, and approval of predecessor service.

  • Act as retirement plan audit contact, answer audit questions, and supply data and enrollment information as needed.

  • Manage all employee leaves of absence including Massachusetts PFML, FMLA, College leaves, and disability leaves.

  • Coordinate with Payroll on benefits and leave matters, payroll audits, HRIS benefits set up, and related subjects.

  • Manage relationships with plan vendors and coordinate with internal committees and external partners to ensure smooth processes.

  • Process claims as necessary; resolve benefit claims issues raised by employees and vendors.

  • Reconcile and process benefit plan bills for payment.

  • Present benefits orientation to new hires; answer benefits and HR-related questions in a timely manner.

  • Manage annual ACA compliance and 1095 generation.

  • Provide back-end system setup for benefit rates, vendors, and eligibility.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

  • 5-7 years of experience in benefits administration in a business or higher education setting, preferred.

  • Proficiency in Google Suite and ADP, preferred.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, professional judgment, and follow-through.

  • Able to work collaboratively with a team in a fast-paced environment.

  • Flexible with the ability to manage multiple shifting priorities and ambiguity.

  • Commitment to and experience with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion best practices, especially in higher education.
