Warrior Skaters Defeat UNH in Conference Playoff Opener

Four different players found the back of the net, and junior goaltender Collin Delia stopped all 25 shots he saw, to propel the Merrimack men's hockey team to a 4-0 victory over New Hampshire in Game 1 of their 2017 Hockey East opening-round playoff series March 3 at Lawler Rink.

Merrimack will go for the series sweep and a chance to advance to the quarterfinal round of the league tournament for the third straight season on Saturday, March 4, at 7 p.m., also at Lawler Rink.

If a third and deciding game is needed, Merrimack will host UNH on Sunday, March 5, at 7 p.m.

In Friday’s victory, freshman forward Sami Tavernier put the Warriors on top on a backhander at 5:50 of the first period. Sophomore Derek Petti made it 2-0 with just under five minutes left in the first.

Senior Chris LeBlanc scored the lone goal of the second period, burying a one-timer past New Hampshire goalie Daniel Tirone, and freshman Tyler Irvine capped the scoring with an empty-netter at 16:32 of the third.
