Serving Up Sandwiches for Neighbors in Need

As part of a community service initiative through Merrimack's First Year Experience program, more than 60 students recently prepared approximately 2,000 sandwiches for Daybreak Shelter in Lawrence, Massachusetts.

Students gathered in the Sakowich Campus Center and spent three hours of their time assembling meals for those in need. All sandwich supplies were donated by Sodexo.

First Year Experience is an 11-week course with small classes and hands-on activities designed to support freshmen during their critical first year on campus.

“The service component of the course reflects our values as an Augustinian institution and has prompted a variety of ways our students can give back to the community,” said Kathleen Vaillancourt, the program’s assistant director of student success. “There are several programs students can choose from, one being the sandwich-making project.”

Business major Savanah Robbins ’20 said Merrimack’s community-service ethos was a main reason she chose to transfer to the college.

“Through events such as this, I get to know a lot of other students who also like to give back, and I look forward to doing it again next year,” she said.
