Financial Workshops Prepare Students for a Healthy Financial Future
The Financial Capability Center this semester sponsored a series of three workshops designed to help students prepare for healthy financial futures. The workshops covered topics ranging from paying for college and saving for the future to understanding how to protect yourself from credit card fraud and identify theft.
In the workshop focused on Financial Planning, adjunct instructor Ric Ogden, CPA (www.AndoverTax.com) highlighted the tools available for students to pay for a college education and the importance of starting their retirement planning early. “Paying for a quality college education is a huge challenge for most families, but that burden can be eased by using tax-advantaged savings plans and taking steps to maximize your chances of securing financial aid,” Ogden said.
Presenter Ana Luna of ACT Lawrence led a workshop on managing credit and learning how it affects your financial identity. As part of the session, she advised students to become familiar with credit reports. “You should review your credit report annually and dispute any errors promptly,” she said. “This is something everyone can do to prevent identity theft.”
Center Director and Associate Professor of Finance, Ana Silva, will again be teaching her popular Fieldwork in Financial Coaching course in the spring semester (for more information on how to apply for this course - open to all majors on campus - please contact Rosanna Inirio).
The Financial Capability Center will also be offering drop-in tax assistance clinics on campus (Crowe 127) and, in partnership with Hands to Help, at St. Mary’s Church in Lawrence (301 Haverhill St, Lawrence, MA).
