Former Merrimack Professor Now Bangladesh Foreign Minister

Former Merrimack College professor Abdul Momen has been named foreign minister of Bangladesh.

He taught management at Merrimack from September 1990 through June 1995.

Momen had been the Bangladeshi ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations in New York since August 2009 and was elected chair of the UN’s 55-member Asia Pacific Group. He has been an advisor to the World Bank and an economic development advisor to the Saudi government.

While teaching at Merrimack, he began an international effort to combat human trafficking.

Among numerous posts at the United Nations, Momen served as vice-president of the General Assembly during 2012-2013. During that year he discharged the responsibility of the acting president of the General Assembly three different times.
