Kathleen Shine Cain

Global Education Office

During her long tenure at Merrimack College, Kathleen Shine Cain, Ph.D., has taught a range of courses in literature and writing, and served as chair of the English department, president of the Faculty Senate and director of the Writing Center.

She was a visiting professor at St. Mary’s University College of Queen’s University, in Belfast, Northern Ireland, during the 2005-06 academic year. Her interest in global education piqued, Cain co-chaired the collegewide Internationalization leadership team, which developed a strategic plan for internationalizing the campus.

The Belfast experience also led to her developing a short-term study-abroad program on the troubles in Northern Ireland. Fifty students have taken the course during the past four years, many calling the in-country component one of the most transformational experiences of their college careers.

Cain is eager to work with other faculty to develop similar courses, offering Merrimack students the opportunity to immerse themselves in a culture different from their own.
