Karen Hayden joined the Merrimack College faculty in 1997, earned tenure and promotion in 2001 and was promoted to full professor in 2017. She served as chair of the Department of Sociology and Criminology before moving on to chair the Department of Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Dr. Hayden’s areas of interest include girls, women, and crime; rural crime; society and law; and cultural criminology. Her work has appeared in Contemporary Sociology, Studies in Symbolic Interaction, and Teaching Sociology. She also wrote chapters in the edited volumes, Against Urbanormativity: Perspectives on Rural Theory and Reimagining Rural: Urbanormative Portrayals of Rural Life and has two books in preparation: one on society and law and one on images of rural people and rural crime in popular culture.
