Dr. Coakley earned a Ph.D. and a master’s in history from University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a bachelor’s in history/education and sociology from Marlboro College. He has been an adjunct professor in history at Merrimack since 2014 and has taught at Northeastern University and Tufts University. He has published an essay in The Newberry Library series and has presented papers or talks at nine conferences. His research interests are the colonial Caribbean, piracy and privateering and the slave trade.
