Women’s and Gender Studies
Debra Michals is a graduate of Boston University and holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in U.S. history from New York University. She served as acting director of women’s and gender studies at Merrimack in spring 2016 and in 2008, where she has also been an adjunct.
Michals was previously acting associate director of women’s studies at New York University. Her research interests focus on gender and entrepreneurship since World War II, with an emphasis on the activist potential of business ownership for marginalized groups.
She recently was a member of the Scholar Group advising the Congressional Commission for the proposed American Museum of Women’s History. She is also a consultant/biographer for the online National Women’s History Museum, and co-authored an exhibit on the history of women’s entrepreneurship.
