He served two terms as Faculty Senate President and has been actively involved in rewriting the Faculty Handbook and providing guidance of collegial governance.
Professor Tontar secured and administered a $600,000 grant from HUD to involve the college in the Greater Lawrence community. Merrimack College was one of 12 institutions of higher learning and only one of two undergraduate institutions to receive the HUD grant.
He also co-wrote and received an Environmental Justice Grant and was the 2010 recipient of the Thomas P. Hogan award for Excellence in Collegial Governance.
Professor Tontar has taught Principles of Microeconomics, Principles of Macroeconomics, Introduction to Economics, History of Economic Thought, Labor Economics, Marxian Economics, Urban and Regional Economics and Ecological Economics.
