James Chiavelli


Chief of Staff to the President




Jim Chiavelli, P’18, joined the college in 2014 as associate vice president of communications. In 2015, he served for a short time as chief of staff to the provost before returning to the Office of Communications as vice president. He was promoted to chief of staff to the president in February 2017.

Chiavelli previously held public relations and public affairs roles during 12 years at Northeastern University.

He was in the Theatre Psychological Operations Support Element of the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan in 2005-06, and returned to the country twice as a freelance journalist. Earlier, he was a newspaperman for nearly two decades, and taught journalism at Northeastern and Merrimack from 2004 to 2015.

Chiavelli holds an A.B. from Harvard College; an M.A. from Northeastern, with a thesis on journalism ethics; and is a Ph.D. student in terrorism studies at UMass-Lowell.

He is a Selective Service board member, an honorary Middlesex County deputy sheriff and a member of the Lawrence (Massachusetts) Rod & Gun Club.
