Starting your college search can feel overwhelming—so many schools, deadlines and decisions to keep track of! If you’ve just begun exploring or already have a few schools in mind, this checklist will help you stay organized, on track and confident in your next steps.
Explore Colleges on Sites Like Niche and Appily
These often have reviews from current students or applicant statistics which offer valuable insight about the school.
Build Your College List
Remember to include a variety of sizes, settings and locations to find the right fit for you. If you already have a major in mind, make sure these schools have the programs you’re looking for.
Plan Your College Visits
From tours to interviews to Open Houses, colleges offer a variety of visit options—and Merrimack is no exception! You can find all our visits and events at www.merrrimack.edu/visit!
Create a College Calendar
Colleges have different admission timelines for applying, scholarships, special programs and more. Start talking with your parents/guardians about financial aid and if you’ll be filing the FAFSA, too.
Start Your College Essay
You can find essay prompts on the Common App’s website, along with helpful guidelines to help you craft a strong and personal statement. At Merrimack, we don’t require an essay but we’ll read it if you send one!
Prepare Your Application Materials
Make a list of jobs you’ve had, community service you’ve performed, sports you’ve played, clubs you’ve joined and any other activities or achievements you can think of.
Line Up Your Recommenders
Some schools require letters of recommendation from counselors, teachers, coaches or others that know you well. It’s never too early to ask! Merrimack doesn’t require these either, but will take them into consideration if received.
Create Your Common App Account
The Common Application is used by over 1000+ colleges and allows you to apply to multiple schools with one application. The Common App opens on August 1 every year; don’t forget to add Merrimack to your list!
