Michael E. Shunney

Mike Shunney is Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Employee Benefits Group of Sun Life Financial’s U.S. Operations. He is responsible for the group insurance business in the U.S., including the development of group life, disability, medical stop-loss and dental products, underwriting, strategic planning and execution, profitability management, and financial planning and analysis. He was named to this position in October 2008 and led the business to a top ten position in the U.S. employee benefits marketplace.

Mr. Shunney joined Sun Life Financial U.S. in 1994 as Director, Group Long-Term Disability products before becoming Regional Vice President, Group Distribution and Vice President, Group Products. He has since held several executive roles at Sun Life Financial U.S., including Senior Vice President and General Manager of Sun Life Financial Distribution Group, President of Sun Life Financial Distributors, Inc., and Senior Vice President and General Manager of U.S. Distribution. In these roles, he was responsible for all aspects of distribution for the annuities, employee group benefits, and individual life insurance products and services offered by Sun Life Financial in the U.S.

Mr. Shunney is a member of the class of 1980 and holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Merrimack College. He is a member of the board of directors of the Doug Flutie, Jr. Foundation for Autism, and a member of the President’s Advisory Council at Merrimack College.
