School of Education: Undergraduate Program

Program Overview

The undergraduate education program at Merrimack College offers a Major in Education and a Major in Human Development (both with various licensure options), a Minor in Education, and new for the 2011-12 academic year: a STEM Education Major. When considering any Education Major, inquire about a dual-licensure option. All education programs are grounded in the liberal arts and students take a variety of courses designed to strike a balance between content & methodology; theory & practice; and between ideas and the application of ideas to schools and to education programs in grades PreK–12.
The School of Education also offers graduate studies designed to compliment our undergraduate degrees with 9th semester, 5th year and Fellowship options.

Our Faculty

Our faculty have in-depth PreK-12, community and higher education experience and expertise. They strive to personalize their teaching to meet the unique needs of each student and make an effort to know and establish bonds with all education students. All students in the undergraduate education program are assigned an advisor as well as an advisor within their double major program. Current and prospective students are encouraged to meet with our advisors to map out their future in education.

Field Experience

All education students have multiple opportunities to gain in-depth observational and practical experiences within a classroom or site which best fits a student's area of interest. Students begin to develop their own philosophy, create a portfolio and establish meaningful, professional relationships within their placement sites.

The School of Education programs are accredited by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). The programs are currently going through the reaccreditation process so please refer to these webpages for the most current and accurate information regarding all departmental options and requirements.
