MTEL Requirements for Merrimack Students

Education students must pass the Massachusetts Test for Educator Licensure, the MTELs, to teach in Massachusetts schools, as required by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. The matrix at the bottom of this page indicates which MTELs you will need to pass to teach in your area of licensure.   

MTEL Preparation Workshops

Merrimack’s School of Education offers MTEL Preparation Workshops. REGISTRATION for these workshops is required and there is a nominal charge ($25: Merrimack Students & $50 for non-Merrimack Students).

For undergraduates:  It is strongly encouraged that the Communication and Literacy test is taken and passed by the end of the sophmore year and the Foundations of Reading MTEL (if applicable) taken concurrently with enrollment in EDU 3310. Additionally, all students should have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA prior to entry into the student-teaching semester.

For all students (undergraduate and graduate): All MTEL tests (including the General Curriculum & subject matter tests) should be passed prior to entry into the student-teaching semester.
