Jonathan Lyon, Ph.D.

Vice Provost

Jon Lyon joined Merrimack in 2001 as an associate professor of biology, and was promoted to professor in 2014. He was president of the Faculty Senate from 2015-16, chair of biology from 2013-16, co-director of the environmental studies and sustainability program from 2011-13 and co-director of the environmental science program from 2002-05. He also was co-founder of the interdisciplinary ESS program.

Lyon is a graduate of Beloit College and holds a doctorate in ecology from Pennsylvania State University. His research focus is on applied ecological investigations of the composition, structure and dynamics of both terrestrial and aquatic systems, with a specific focus on riparian corridors and freshwater aquatic plant communities. He also has strong interests and has published on conservation and, in particular, community-based conservation efforts.

He has published in journals such as Plant Ecology, Forest Ecology and Management and Oryx, and has authored or co-authored several book chapters on forest ecology and community-based conservation.

Lyon also has forged successful and funded environmental partnerships among Merrimack, regional not-for-profits, municipalities and state agencies to address freshwater and ecosystem impairment issues in northeast Massachusetts.
