Chemistry & Biochemistry

Biochemistry

As a biochemistry major, you’ll gain a thorough understanding of theoretical and practical chemical principles through coursework in chemistry, biology, math and physics.

You’ll then have a chance to build your skills by exploring chemical processes in our state-of-the-art labs. Whether your passion lies in agriculture, biotechnology, veterinary science or medicine, you’ll build the foundation you need to succeed.

Meet Your Major

 In the biochemistry program, you will:

  • Explore a multitude of ways to solve biological problems on a molecular level.
  • Learn to think broadly, creatively and independently within the field, and to communicate your scientific insight both in writing and orally.
  • Discover fundamental chemical concepts and laboratory skills.
  • Utilize cutting-edge tools and instruments like x, y and z, which are being used in top biochemistry laboratories around the world.
  • Have ample opportunity to engage in original research on topics as varied as microwave chemistry and smart molecules.

Hands-on Learning

You’ll have the chance to conduct independent research, with guidance from a faculty mentor, and then present your work at conferences and in scientific journals. Plus, you can discuss science outside the classroom at clubs like Benzene Ring, Campus Environmental Sustainability Initiative and the Biology Club.

Career Options

Upon successful completion of the biochemistry program, you’ll be well-equipped to pursue advanced studies or a career in chemistry, chemical engineering, environmental science, forensic science, medicine or dentistry. Positions may include:
