About Wheeling, WV

Eleven students, two student leaders, and two advisers travel to Lantz Farm through the Wheeling Jesuit University Appalachian Institute. Serve at the farm while learning about economic, social, and historical challenges of life in the Appalachian region. http://www.wju.edu/ai/immersion.asp 

 

About Pine Ridge, SD

Re-Member is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which works with the Oglala Lakota Nation on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota. They improve the quality of reservation life through relationships, shared resources and volunteer services. Eleven students, two student leaders, and two advisers will travel to work on the reservation and be immersed in Oglala Sioux tribal culture.

About New Orleans, LA

lowernine.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the long-term recovery of the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the levee breaches of 2005. Six students, two student leaders, and two advisers spend a week focusing on home repair and learning about the continual challenges since the devastating storms. www.lowernine.org

About San Diego, CA

Via International is a 501(c)3 service organization based in San Diego and dedicated to building “paths to self-reliance for an interdependent world.” Eleven students, two student leaders, and two advisers travel to the border of the US and Mexico to learn about issues concerning immigration and border culture. www.viainternational.org

About Emmaus Farm, KY

Emmaus Farm is a non-profit organization dedicated to service in the community in rural Kentucky. Eleven students, two student leaders, and two faculty/staff advisors will participate in various acts of service for Lewis County and participate in Appalachian cultural immersion, while spending a week living into their cornerstones of simplicity, community, prayer, and service. http://emmausfarm.org/ 

 

In order to participate in Alternative Spring Break, participants must:
  • Participate in all large and small group meetings
  • Pay their non-refundable, $100 deposit
  • Work with their team to fundraise for the experience
  • Fill out all required paperwork given by your placement and Merrimack College
  • Approach this experience with openness, excitement, and mutual respect

Large Group Meeting Dates (you must be present at these meetings):

1 weekday at the end of January/Beginning of February from 7:30-8:30 PM

1 weekday at the beginning of March from 7:30-8:30 PM
