About Baltimore, MD

Catholic Charities in Baltimore, MD allows college students from across the county to spend their spring breaks in Baltimore serving Catholic Charities programs and the community. 6 students, 2 advisers, and two student leaders will participate in service through Catholic Charities’ programming and learn about the ways that this organization helps alleviate injustice and poverty in Baltimore.

About Wheeling, WV

Eleven students, two student leaders, and two advisers travel to Lantz Farm through the Wheeling Jesuit University Appalachian Institute. Do service and learn about the situation that people in Appalachia live in on a day-to-day basis. http://www.wju.edu/ai/immersion.asp

 

About Almost Heaven, WV

This is an Alternative Spring Break placement. Eleven students, two student leaders, and two advisers travel to the Appalachian region of the country to participate in Habitat for Humanity work, including light home repair and working in the Re*Store.



About Nazareth Farm, WV

8 students, 2 student leaders, and 2 faculty/staff advisers travel to work within the community of Salem, WV through Nazareth Farm. The service will include a mixture of working in local community organizations and light home repair. www.nazarethfarm.org Note: Students will leave for this experience Sunday, 3/12

 

About Pine Ridge, SD

Re-Member is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, which works with the Oglala Lakota Nation on Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota USA. They improve the quality of reservation life through relationships, shared resources and volunteer services. 11 students, two student leaders, and two advisers will travel to work on the reservation and be immersed into Native American culture.  .

About New Orleans, LA

lowernine.org is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the long-term recovery of the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans, Louisiana in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, and the levee breaches of 2005. Six students, two student leaders, and two advisers spend a week doing light home repair. www.lowernine.org

 

About San Diego, CA

Via International is a 501(c)3 service organization based in San Diego and dedicated to building “paths to self-reliance for an interdependent world.” Eleven students, two student leaders, and two advisers travel to the border of the US and Mexico to learn about issues concerning immigration and border culture. www.viainternational.org

 

In order to participate in Alternative Spring Break, participants must:
  • Participate in all large and small group meetings
  • Pay their non-refundable, $100 deposit
  • Work with their team to fundraise for the experience
  • Fill out all required paperwork given by your placement and Merrimack College
  • Approach this experience with openness, excitement, and respect

Large Group Meeting Dates (you must be present at these meetings):

1 Tuesday/Wednesday at the end of January/Beginning of February from 7:30-8:30 (Cascia Hall)
