Mack Minds: Sensory Cell Development
What if we could regrow the cells that allow us to hear? Dr. Maggie Matern, assistant professor of neuroscience and molecular biology, is working to make that possible.
Using organoids, or "organs in a dish,” her lab recreates inner ear development and eventually produces sensory cells. Her research brings us closer to regenerating damaged hair cells and ultimately restoring hearing.
