College visits are one of the most exciting (and important!) parts of the admission process. But with so many visit options to choose from, how do you know what to do and when? Each one offers something a little different depending on where you are in the process—so let’s break it down!
Campus Tour
A guided walk around the college campus led by a current student or admission representative. During the tour, you will learn about the school and see students living their day-to-day life which helps you picture yourself as a student.
When: Sophomore, junior or senior year of high school
Best for: Students early in their search looking to get a feel for campus fit and vibe
Information Session
A presentation about the school that covers general information such as majors offered, how to apply and more. These are typically paired with tours and are also hosted by student ambassadors or admission counselors.
When: Sophomore, junior or senior year of high school
Best for: Students and families looking for an overview or introduction to what the college has to offer
Open House
A larger campus-wide event lasting a few hours or all day and usually include tours and info sessions, as well as other activities specific to academics, residence life, athletics, dining or other aspects of the college you don’t experience during a normal visit.
When: Spring of junior year or Fall of senior year of high school
Best for: Students narrowing down their list or comparing top contenders
Interview
A one-on-one meeting with an admission representative where you discuss your goals and qualifications as a student and why you would be a good fit for their community. Some schools might require an interview or encourage one as part of the admission process. Merrimack offers Counselor Chats which are a little more casual!
When: Fall or Winter of your senior year of high school
Best for: Applicants who are really excited about a school and looking to stand out
Admitted Student Day
You’re in—now it’s time to celebrate! Similar to an Open House, these events
offer a variety of activities alongside other admitted students so you can start meeting future classmates and truly ask yourself if this is where you want to be next year!
When: After you’ve been admitted to the college, typically during the Spring of your senior year
Best for: Admitted students making final decisions
