Cor Unum
Cor Unum (“One Heart”) helps students develop a spiritual life within an intentional community. It focuses on two main aspects of Augustinian spirituality, restlessness and community.
This group helps students understand their restlessness by discerning where God is calling them and who God is calling them to be. Spiritual practices rooted in the Catholic tradition guide their restless journey toward God.
The restless, spiritual search is done in community, where the students care for one another and grow together toward God. The group fosters a sense of belonging so that students can find support to live out their faith and understand more deeply their purpose in life.
Both restlessness and community can also help students face challenges of modern college life, such
as academic stress, social disconnection and anxiety, and uncertainty about one’s place and purpose.
Through this group, students develop a spiritual life that will enable them to be thoughtful and compassionate young men and women to respond to these challenges and initiate life-long spiritual formation.
The activities of Cor Unum include individual spiritual practice, weekly prayer and meals together, semesterly gatherings throughout the semester for workshops and retreats, and spiritual direction.
1. Spiritual Practices
- Students engage in a consistent personal spiritual and prayer
practice as a way to give direction to their restless journey toward God.
2. Weekly Prayer and Reflection
- Each week, the group comes together for reflection and meal. Drawing on Augustine’s own desire to develop his faith in community, these times will provide the support for students in their spiritual journeys.
3. Semesterly Workshops and Retreats
- On-campus workshops help students understand spirituality in a broader lens, giving them resources and ways to develop their spirituality and situate spirituality within a larger theological and historical context.
- Off-campus retreats focus on prayer and discernment. They allow students to step away for an extended time from academic and social stress to deepen
their relationship with God and reflect on their calling in life.
4. Regular Spiritual Direction
- Each student will have a faculty, staff, or other qualified member that will serve as a spiritual director who supports the student in their spiritual growth. These meetings take place monthly and are scheduled with the spiritual director.
- This group is for Juniors and Seniors. Applications come out each Spring. A yearly scholarship of $2500 is available.
