Co-Curricular Internships

The purpose of departmentally sponsored, co-curricular internships is to provide opportunities for English majors and minors to:

  • Apply their literary knowledge and skills in analysis and writing
  • Refine and apply research skills in multimedia formats
  • Gain marketable experience working collaboratively and effectively with others in time-sensitive circumstances
  • Contribute to the growth and health of the Merrimack English program, and to the stature of the literary arts within the Merrimack community.

The Broadsheet Production Board

This internship opportunity involves up to five students producing a monthly departmental newsletter under the direction of a full-time English department faculty member. Student interns serve on the newsletter editorial board and oversee all aspects of production, including the conceptualization of each issue’s focus. Interns are also responsible for formatting, writing, editing and distributing the newsletter to the Merrimack community.

Field Activity Researchers

Student interns work as field-activity assistants for special English course offerings that include hands-on/field-visit components. These positions require students to work with the instructors teaching such courses to help faculty identify feasible field destinations, activities, and appropriate field contacts; perform relevant online research; assist faculty in organizing location visits; and, should their schedules permit, participate in field activities and location visits with the class group.

Annual Spring Symposium Programming Board

Under the guidance of a full-time English faculty member, senior English majors awarded this internship participate in planning, organizing and overseeing all aspects of the Spring Symposium, including conceptualizing a theme for the event. The purpose of the symposium will be to showcase all forms of student and faculty literary production at Merrimack.

Writers House and Studio Programming Board

Working under the mentorship of the full-time director of The Writers House and Studio, student interns assist the director and program coordinator in planning, organizing, publicizing and hosting events held at the facility, such as public readings, lectures, book parties and signings, workshops and other activities.
