We recognize your service and honor it with tailored support, including guidance on how to receive full coverage for most master’s degrees, graduate certificates and Bachelor’s Degree Completion programs through the GI Bill® and Yellow Ribbon® benefits.

Students may also receive monthly stipends toward tuition through Chapter 1606 benefits (Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)) or through Chapter 35 benefits (Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program).

Our History of Supporting Veterans

Merrimack College was founded in 1947 by the Order of St. Augustine to educate returning World War II veterans for the post-war workforce. We are dedicated to supporting the transition of veterans and military-affiliated students to Merrimack College in pursuit of academic and professional success, including:

Comprehensive Tuition Coverage

Post‑9/11 GI Bill® & Yellow Ribbon®

Eligible veterans using the Post‑9/11 GI Bill® (Chapter 33) receive up to 100% coverage on tuition and fees. Merrimack participates in the Yellow Ribbon Program to cover a portion of the remaining costs—in most cases, there is no out-of-pocket tuition expense for graduate or undergraduate programs.

Chapter 1606 & Chapter 35

Active reservists may be able to receive significant monthly stipends toward tuition as part of Chapter 1606 benefits (Montgomery GI Bill® Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR)). 

If you’re the spouse or child of a Veteran who has died, is missing, or has a permanent and total service-connected disability, you may be able to receive help paying for school through Chapter 35 (Survivors’ and Dependents’ Educational Assistance (DEA) program) benefits, which include significant monthly stipends toward tuition.

Please note that benefit amount varies based on education type, eligibility factors and chosen course-load.

Military Tuition Assistance + VA Top-Up Options

Active-duty service members may be able to combine Department of Defense (DoD) Tuition Assistance (up to $4,500/year) with Veteran Affairs (VA) Top-Up benefits to fully fund their graduate or undergraduate coursework.

Your military training and experience can qualify for academic credit, accelerating your path to graduation.

  1. Apply for benefits and request your Certificate of Eligibility on the VA website.

  3. Check Benefit Eligibility — Connect with Merrimack’s Veterans Affairs Office for information on Yellow Ribbon, GI Bill®, Chapter 35, or Chapter 1606 options. Verify your GI Bill® eligibility and benefit tier, as your tier varies by length of service. 
  4. Apply & Submit VA Certification — Work with our Veterans Affairs Office to certify enrollment, expedite benefit activation and assess any transfer credit.

The VA makes all decisions regarding payments. Please contact the VA directly if you have not received your checks or have questions regarding your benefits at 888-442-4551.

Once a student is certified for a term by the school, it can take four to six weeks to receive a check from the VA.

Accessibility Services

For veterans who are looking to complete their bachelor’s degree, we have a selection of part-time, 100% online degree paths as part of our Bachelor’s Degree Completion (BDC) program that span a wide variety of majors. With our BDC paths, you have the opportunity to transfer up to 90 credits of prior coursework and take only the remaining undergraduate credits you need to earn your bachelor’s degree.
