Supporting Your High School Student

Welcome Prospective Parents and Families

Choosing a college is very much a family decision, and whether you are a first-time college parent or have already gone through the process, Merrimack is here to help you along the way.

We’ve gathered some resources, links and more below to hopefully make the process a little easier. Be sure to join our mailing list so we can send you important news and updates about Merrimack.

Did you know?

Typically we only email students because we don’t have an email address for a parent. But we want to keep you in the loop too! Click the button above to add YOUR email address to your student’s record.

Applying to Merrimack

No Application Fee: We do not charge a fee to apply to Merrimack, and there is no waiver needed. It’s just free—simple as that!

Automatic Scholarship Consideration: Merrimack invests more than $110 million annually in institutional financial aid. 100% of students receive merit and/or need-based aid, with awards ranging from $2,000 – $40,000 annually.

Flexible Deadlines: Merrimack offers Early Decision and Early Action I deadlines on November 15, and then a second round of EA II on January 15, followed by Regular Decision on February 15 and Rolling Admission thereafter. So— whenever your student is ready to apply, we’re ready too!

Test Scores Not Required: We do not use test scores in our application review process. Instead, we look closely at transcripts, GPA and other application documents to evaluate college readiness and fit.

Essays and Recommendations Optional: These often stress students out the most and cause added barriers or delays. If submitted, we will take them into consideration as part of our review but neither one is required for admission.

Tips for Parents

  • Expect Ambivalence: Both you and your student may feel excitement and nostalgia at the same time.
  • Recognize Emotional Ups and Downs: Independence and dependence may fluctuate day to day.
  • Don’t Say “Best Years of Your Life”: College has highs and lows—normalize the mix of experiences.
  • Plan How to Keep in Touch: Decide on calls, texts, or emails, but allow independence.
  • Be a Coach, Not a Problem-Solver: Encourage your student to use campus resources like advisors, tutors, or the Counseling Center.
  • Be an Anchor: Keep your student informed about changes at home to help them feel secure.
