Position Overview
The Professional Tutor is a part-time (10 hours/week) member of the Merrimack College Writing Center team. Provide assistance to student writers at all levels of ability, in all disciplines, at any stage of the writing process. Provide specialized assistance to graduate students. Supervise peer writing consultants on evening shifts and assist them when working with challenging sessions.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Conduct writing consultations with students to identify and address writing concerns in a manner consistent with Merrimack College Writing Center policies and procedures
  • Attend staff meetings, contribute to staff meeting planning, and otherwise serve as a resource to undergraduate staff
  • Assist with monitoring and managing scheduling system and shared writing center e-mail inbox
  • Collect/develop student and staff resources (handouts, research guides, etc.) and stay up-to-date on field practices and developments
  • Supervise undergraduate peer writing consultants on evening shifts
  • Write promotional materials (website copy, brochures, etc.) and advertise graduate writing support to campus community through various channels
  • Liaise with instructors and other campus support to identify student needs and develop programming
  • Provide administrative support as needed/assigned
  • Assist with tutor training and recruitment, including conducting observations of undergraduate staff
  • Other duties, as assigned


Qualifications

  • MA in English, Rhetoric/Composition, or related discipline
  • Familiarity with MLA and APA styles/documentation
  • Ability to engage in dialogue rather than ‘correcting’ student writing
  • Excellent writing ability and interpersonal skills
  • Tutoring experience, experience working with multilingual writers
  • Teaching experience at high school or college level, supervisory experience preferred

This is an on-campus position as employees are essential in order to provide a fully on-campus, residential college experience for our students and the community.
