Parents & Families Guide to College: Supporting Your Warrior at Merrimack

Choosing a college is a big step (for your student and for you). At Merrimack College, we understand the mix of excitement and uncertainty that comes with this transition. To make things easier, we’ve gathered helpful tips, key dates, and resources to guide your family through the college search, decision and transition process.

1. Keep Track of Key Dates

One of the best ways to support your student is by helping them stay organized, without taking over.

  • Application & admission deadlines: Encourage your student to keep track of required materials and decision release dates.
  • FAFSA & scholarships: Completing the FAFSA early ensures priority consideration for aid and scholarships.
  • Campus visits & events: Attend in-person or virtual sessions designed for students and families.
  • Next steps for admitted students: Mark down orientation, housing and move-in dates early.

Tip: Create a shared calendar to stay on top of deadlines while encouraging your student to take the lead.

2. Support Independence

Your encouragement means everything, especially as your student begins to navigate more on their own.

  • Encourage independence: College is about growth. Give your student room to make decisions, with you as a steady guide.
  • Ask open-ended questions: Try “What’s your plan for this week?” instead of “Did you do it yet?”
  • Understand the transition: Services like counseling, accessibility and Academic Success Centers help students self-advocate.
  • Stay connected emotionally: Homesickness and adjustment are normal. Remind them you’re always in their corner.
