My research focuses on mutual funds’ motivations to invest in various types of securities and the implications of such choices. Part of my thesis, which was published in the Quarterly Journal of Finance, shows that mutual funds’ use of derivatives improves their performance without adversely affecting the risk and cost. The results can have significant policy implications, as the use of these instruments has come under scrutiny after the recent financial crisis.
