M.Ed. in School Counseling Graduate Looks to Make a Positive Impact in College and Career Planning

Katelyn Leboeuf graduated from Merrimack with a M.Ed. in School Counseling after switching her career path from teaching. Upon her acceptance into Merrimack’s School Counseling graduate program, Katelyn was awarded a fellowship position, where she worked as a teaching assistant for an undergraduate human development course at Merrimack, helping students to become Youth Mental Health First Aid certified.

Katelyn has a passion for working with highschool students. She is specifically interested in college and career planning processes. She explains:

“I want to be that person who is there for students to say, ‘Hey, college isn’t for everybody. Here are some other opportunities for you to consider in addition to going to a traditional college.’ When I was in high school, there was a lot of pressure put on students to go that route. I want to let students know that there are other options out there for them, too.”

I want to be that support person for the quieter kids that don’t feel like they have somebody to talk to. I want to be a listening ear and help students move towards achieving their goals, whether that be college, career, or any other path they choose. I want to work with the staff, the teachers, parents and community members to make the community a better place for its high school students.

Her Strong Involvement with MASCA

Katelyn, as a school counseling graduate student, was recognized by the Massachusetts School Counselors Association (MASCA) when she was selected as one of just three MASCA Graduate Student Liaisons. In that role she organized panels for graduate students within the organization to help with their professional development. Additionally, MASCA invited Katelyn to be on an episode of their podcast, MASCA Musings, where she shared her experiences as a graduate student and how she has handled some of the challenging situations she has encountered as a counseling professional.

Katelyn’s experience as a School Counseling Graduate Fellow was featured in a Merrimack College news article. Read more here.
