“Where We Belong” Experiencing Mackapella

“Where We Belong” is an original song, music written by myself, words by Mackapella ‘23-’24, that conveys the bittersweet feeling of creating extraordinary bonds within a community and the inevitability of leaving that community behind as we enter a new chapter of our lives. I interviewed several members of Mackapella about their experience as part of the group. Their responses were used to create lyrics to “Where We Belong.” After composing the piece, I arranged it for an a cappella ensemble. Assuming my role as the music director of Mackapella, I was able to teach them “Where We Belong” and record audio of them performing the piece. There will be a live performance of the original song on May 2nd, 2024, at the Research and Creativity Conference.

This project is a culmination of the impact that Merrimack’s music department has had on me, as well as my impact on it. I am extremely proud of the work I have produced with Mackapella throughout my time at Merrimack. Mackapella is where I found my purpose in life, to teach and heal others through music.

My original song and exhibition is meant to be an expression of gratitude toward Mackapella for the growth I have experienced, both musically and personally, throughout my four years as part of the group.
