For Blind and Visually Impaired

Follow these procedures when assisting blind or visually impaired individuals during an evacuation:

  1. Give verbal instructions to advise about the safest exit route, direction and distances using words such as “right,” “left,” “forward,” “backward” and “turn around.” Allow blind and visually impaired individuals to use their cane as you talk them through evacuation.
  2. Do not grasp a visually impaired person’s arm. Ask if he or she would like to hold onto your arm as you exit, especially if there is debris or a crowd.
  3. Give other verbal instructions or information, e.g., elevators cannot be used.
