Merrimack Men’s Lacrosse Lends Helping Hand to Project Home Again

On Saturday, Sept. 11, the Merrimack College men's lacrosse team spent the day helping Project Home Again (PHA), a non-profit organization that provides low-income families in need with new and gently used household goods.

PHA has helped over 10,000 families by providing them with the things they need to live comfortably and with dignity. Their goal is to meet the needs of anyone who walks through their doors, offering household goods like pots and pans, furniture and gently used appliances. To expand their reach and accessibility, they partner with social services across northeastern Massachusetts to serve a diverse and far-reaching population.

PHA has served survivors of domestic abuse, those transitioning from homelessness, immigrants and refugees, veterans and many others. The Merrimack men’s lacrosse team got involved this fall with PHA, whose services benefit greatly from community volunteers.

Over the weekend, Merrimack student-athletes on the lacrosse team lent a hand in moving the PHA warehouse in the city of Lawrence to their new space in Andover. The team moved the PHA stock of goods and saved the organization thousands of dollars in moving expenses by volunteering their time.

Founder and President of PHA Nancy Kanell said, “I really cannot say enough about the team and the help they gave us moving our warehouse. They showed up early and were so eager to help. They had such positive attitudes, were so polite, diligent and efficient.”

The Warriors’ volunteer work took only a little over two hours, where Kanell and her team at PHA had initially estimated the workload to take upwards of four hours. The team’s involvement continues a long line of volunteerism displayed by the men’s lacrosse team and Merrimack Athletics as a whole in the community. As an Augustinian institution founded on the basis of empathy, compassion and service, this work proudly represents the mission of Merrimack College.
