Hosting an Event

Students living in campus housing may host registered events on approved Friday and Saturday nights starting at 10 p.m.

If you are eligible and interested, view this slideshow and complete the request form to host an event. The form opens on Monday at 8:30 a.m. and closes at 8:30 a.m. on Thursdays.

Who can host a registered event?

Students may host a registered event if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • You live in one of the approved residential areas: North Residential Village, O’Brien Hall, South Residential Village, St. Thomas Apartments, or St. Ann Apartments.
  • The sober host is 21+ years old.
  • At least half of the residents of the space are 21+ years of age or older. 
  • All roommates have attended a Sober Host meeting prior to the unit hosting.
  • The host and all of their roommates must all be in good conduct standing. This means the following:
    • Students are not on probationary status with the college.
    • Students are not on an interim removal or suspension status.
    • All occupants of the space may not have pending conduct.
    • Students may be restricted from hosting a Registered Event for any conduct-related reason as determined by the College.

When can I hold my registered event?

Registered events can be held on Friday and Saturday nights. Registered events cannot be held on reading days or during finals weeks, break periods or other weekends as determined by the Office of Residence Life.

Is there a limit to the number of registered events that can be held during the weekend?

Yes, only one registered event may occur in any tower, pod, or hallway in any given residential area in one night.

Are there starting and ending times?

Registered events must begin at 10 p.m., and all entertainment and distribution of alcohol must end by 1 a.m. Resident advisors will be on hand to open and close registered events.

Is there a guest limit?

The number of guests is limited by the occupancy limits of the room in which the event is held, as follows:

  • St. Thomas/St. Ann Apartments: 50 people
  • O’Brien (suites of any size): 28 people
  • North Residential Village (any size): 28 people
  • South Residential Village (any size): 28 people
  • Single rooms in O’Brien, North, or South: 12 people

Must food be served?

Yes, there must be food and alternative beverages at each registered event. Hosts are responsible for ensuring there are a minimum of four 2-liter bottles of nonalcoholic beverages and four full-size bags of snacks.

Is there a limit on alcoholic beverages?

The maximum amount of alcoholic beverages permitted at a registered event is determined by the number of people of legal age in attendance. You may choose one of the following options:

  • Six 12-ounce beers or the equivalent per attendee of legal age.
  • A half-pint (6.8 ounces or 200 mL) of liquor per attendee of legal age.
  • A fifth (25.4 fluid ounces or 750mL) of wine per attendee of legal age.

What happens if there is damage?

Hosts are responsible for the behavior and actions of their guests. If individual culpability cannot be determined, all residents of the apartment will share responsibility for the damages.

What does it mean to be “sober” as a Sober Host?

The Sober Host must be sober and substance-free beginning eight hours prior to the Registered Event through the end of the Registered Event.

What are the responsibilities of the Sober Host?

The Sober Host must be visible and available to the Residence Life staff and attendees at all times, including being present during the entire Registered Event and answering all door knocks and phone calls. The Sober Host must initiate the termination of the Registered Event by 1 a.m. The Sober Host must keep an accurate count of attendees to ensure that the maximum occupancy is not exceeded. The Sober Host must inspect the housing areas and adjacent common areas at the end of the Registered Event and report any damages. The Sober Host must meet with the RA on duty the night after the Registered Event to have the apartment/suite inspected.
